Hello San Diego!
Theater has come roaring back to our lovely town. You can catch Mala at the Old Globe in Balboa Park. Several performances of the play will be in Spanish (and our calendar shows which ones). In the Heights opened yesterday at the San Diego Musical Theatre, and performances will continue until June 5th. The Diary of Anne Frank at Southwestern Colleges has its final performance on Saturday. Mother of the Maid at the Moxie and Come from Away at Civic Theatre will both end this Sunday. The North Coast Rep's Theatre School Production of The Night Witches opens next Thursday. On the 26th, In Every Gerneration opens at the San Diego Rep. Hadestown at the Civic Theatre opens at the end of the month.
Today (Friday), The Gout and the Guillotine exhibition is on display at the USD Humanities Center Gallery. Mexican pop singer Emmanuel will perform at the SDSU's Open Air Theatre. The Music and Dance of Bali concert at Mingei is sold-out, but check the Center for World Music's events page for upcoming concerts in the series.
Saturday and Sunday at Balboa Theatre, San Diego Ballet will perform Giselle.
Saturday, UC San Diego 11th Annual Powwow will take place on Marshall Field. the Chinese Historical Museum will host an online by Dr. Yong Ming Li on his book, Acupuncture Journey to America. You can enjoy tantalizing food, spirits and beer at the Taste of Barrio Logan event. Filipino arts organization PASACAT will hold its 35th Annual Junior Concert at their venue in National City.
Sunday, the heart-warming animated film Coco will be screened atop the Manchester Hyatt.
Monday, Farhad Bahrami will interview drummer Rowan Storm about her life's journey in Middle-Eastern music.
Tuesday, Warwick's will host an online talk with Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, Douglas Irvin-Erickson and Ernesto Verdeja who will discuss their new book, Wicked Problems: the Ethics of Action for Peace, Rights, and Justice. At Los Penasquitos Ranch House, there will be a talk about the History and Archaeological Research of El Cuervo (otherwise known as the Ruiz-Alvarado Adobe).
Wednesday at UCSD, British historian Tim Cole will tells the story of the Shoah through an exploration of landscapes victims moved in his talk Holocaust Landscapes - the Spatiality of Death and Survival. At the Bali Hai Restaurant there will be a Luau Fundraiser for the Pacific Islander Festival. the Chula Vista Library will screen the film Heaven in Auschwitz. At the San Diego History Museum in Balboa Park, Maria Garcia talk about her new book, We Made San Diego, about the impact Latina women have made in San Diego.
Next Thursday, Warwick's will host Billy O'Callaghan online as he discusses his new book, Life Sentences. In a simultaneously live and virtual event, Professor Joseph W. Ho will speak about Missionary Cameras and Modern China in Global Imaginations. The IRC Refugee Film Festival will present and online screening of the animated film Flee. The San Diego Italian Film Festival will screen Rosa Pietra Stella (Rose Stone Star) online.
Next Friday at the Quartyard, the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art will honor local artists and arts leaders at its Keepers of the Culture event. At the San Diego Justice Center, there will be an African Liberation Day Community Forum & Celebration. At the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, you can watch and listen to Mexican group Los Coroneles Del Señor perform rancheras, ballads, boleros, salsas, bossa novas, pasodobles, swing and more.
Next Saturday and Sunday at the Del Norte High School Theatre, there will be a South Asian Culture Show which will include Bollywood dances and more.
Next Saturday at the Laugh Factory, Brown-ish will feature Latino stand-up comics. Familia Loteria 7th Anniversary Celebration will be held at Border X Brewing in Barrio Logan. Lebanese superstar singer Ragheb Alama will perform at Town and Country.
